New players, you’re welcome

Jul 18th, 2009 | Source: | Category: Your View

After another disappointing season, Harry Redknapp is determined not to let this season go to waste. He has already singled out players he don’t want in the team but on the other hand, there has been no sign of new players. Tottenham are filling the soccer rumors columns but the lack of any real activity by the club officials is more than evident. Spurs are practically chasing every available player in the world but in the end, they always seem to choose some other club. This doesn’t mean that I am not over the moon with the fact that we won’t be signing Stuart Downing, but time is running out slowly and if we don’t sign someone soon, we’ll be in big problems.

Latest reports are suggesting Spurs are close to signing Klaas Jan Huntelaar and former Gunner Patrick Vieira. Huntelaar also has the offer from Stuttgart but he is thought to be keen on Premier League move and since United dropped out of the race, the odds are he will join Tottenham. I would be delighted if we manage to capture ‘The Hunter’, who is a vintage marksman and would guarantee Tottenham 20-odd goals per season. On the other hand, Vieira would be a bit more difficult to sign as he would have to take a wage cut, but in my opinion, Spurs should not pursue the Frenchman and this doesn’t have anything to do with his Arsenal links.

It’s clear that Vieira is well past his prime and numerous injuries have made things even worse for him. He is definitely not capable of playing week in week out and there is really no point in signing him to be a mere squad player.

Another thing I quite cannot understand is why the club rejected £14 million for Darren Bent. It is clear that ‘Arry wants to sell him and having paid him just few millions more, this was a great opportunity to get rid of him. I am not sure that any club would be willing to pay more than this for a player who didn’t really impress at Tottenham.

One month before the start of the new season, things are not looking bright for Tottenham. The club management is clearly not doing their job and Harry Redknapp doesn’t seem to know what he wants. Spurs need a couple of big name signings immediately as they need to gel before the season starts.
